Dethatching

Thatch is a layer of dead and living stems, roots and debris between the green grass and the soil. A little is normal, but when it grows past about half an inch it sheds water, harbors pests and keeps fertilizer from reaching the roots.

We dethatch lawns in Nashville and the surrounding cities with power rakes that pull the mat to the surface for cleanup. It is most common on zoysia and bermuda, which build thatch quickly, and we follow it with seeding, feeding or aeration as needed.

FAQ

Common questions about dethatching

How do I know if I have too much thatch?

If the lawn feels spongy and you cannot see soil at the base of the grass, thatch is likely thick.

When should I dethatch?

Late spring for warm-season grasses and early fall for fescue.

Will dethatching hurt my lawn?

It can look rough for a couple of weeks, but the lawn recovers with feeding and water.
